That part of Stammi Vicino where Yuuri gently strokes Victor’s cheek and Victor melts into his touch and Yuuri gives him the softest smile….. very gay and good

imagine yuuri and viktor trying to get married in as many countries as possible
it starts as a joke when after a lovely ceremony in japan, they renew their vows in russia for their first anniversary.
during chris’s (second) speech he jokes that viktor is the only person ridiculous enough to marry the same person twice
viktor laughs and says that anyone married to katsuki yuuri would marry him again. a murmur of agreement ripples through the people in attendance.
but the next year at skate america yuuri runs into a former rinkmate from detroit and after a few drinks they convince yuuri to have another wedding for his friends in america
they take an impromptu detour to detroit and round up all of yuuri’s old
suitorsfriends that still live in the areathey manage to sneak into yuuri’s old dorm room and construct an altar out of red solo cups. their officiant is a former frat boy that once did body shots off yuuri’s butt.
after that it gets out of hand.
“while we’re in barcelona wouldn’t it be romantic to get married again?”
in montreal “everyone’s here! let’s get married!”
there’s a conspicuous empty space at the top of the podium where yuuri should be accepting his gold medal. “where’s katsuki?” one of the announcers asks with concern.
someone whispers in their ear. “ah. it appears katsuki is currently in a parisian courthouse getting married to his coach viktor nikiforov. again.”
When victor and yuuri retire they redecorate victors house so its homey and not The Pit Of Colorless Despair™ and then they get a bigger couch so victor yuuri + makkadoggo can all fit and victor and yuuri will give eachother nose kisses and cheek kisses and forehead kisses and all the kisses and then makkadoggo will lick both of their faces and they laugh and have good times with homey house couch kisses
I was rewatching episode 6 and noticed how the maccachin thrown looked pretty deflated, almost like someone just ripped out a tissue box from it before throwing it on the ice because they didn’t have any other plushies in reach
a lot of people genuinely don’t seem to understand just WHY a significant amount of gay people have loved yuri on ice so much. it’s not JUST because it’s a gay couple. there have been plenty of terrible anime and manga that portray gay and lesbian couples in unhealthy, fetishistic ways. YOI is different.
There were no creepy age gaps, no creepy sexual aggression, no fetishistic scenes of viktor and yuri making out in maximum detail. they were two grown men in deep love with each other who showed it in simple, realistic way–shopping dates, holding hands, having arguments where they constructively and honestly dealt with their problems came out closer on the other side, emotionally supporting each other. It is so very much unlike so many anime before it, and it didn’t bait us either. No one was called a slur, no one died, and they were happy in the end, together! That’s a fuckin rarity.
So no we don’t take yoi because it’s a scrap and we’re desperate, people in the community like it because it’s a healthy, positive portrayal of two people of the same gender in love with each other and supporting each other.
The other reason it was so important to me was the total lack of homophobia in this universe. Because after episode 7, while I was wonderfully surprised and utterly delighted that we weren’t being baited after all, I was bracing myself for the backlash I expected against two famous male athletes who kissed on international TV. But then? It never happened. There WAS no controversy, no disgust, no drama, no one even felt the need to mention it because two men being in a romantic relationship is seen as a perfectly normal in this world. There’s never any insults about their orientation or jokes where being gay is the punchline. There’s no ‘b-but we’re both guys!’ bullshit. Two men are allowed to kiss and be in love and just exist like it’s no big deal!
I didn’t realize before YOI how much I needed a fantasy like this. It’s exhausting when so much queer media is about our suffering, about kids thrown out of their homes and threats of violence and staying in the closet for your own safety. It felt so liberating to see that, oh, we don’t always have to tell stories about that. We don’t always have to be ‘realistic.’ We can tell stories about people like us in a world that’s better and kinder. That realization felt like being set free. I could write stories about people like me, without the silence and fear. That really means a lot to me.
